ECMC Scholars Program in Oregon
Participating Schools
In 2006, seven schools were chosen by the Oregon State Superintendent's office based on number of students on the reduced or free lunch program, and with a low graduation and college-going rate. ECMC Foundation added an eighth school, La Pine, in 2007.
The Oregon ECMC Scholars high schools are:
- Centennial Learning Center (Portland)
- Illinois Valley High School (Cave Junction)
- La Pine High School (La Pine)
- Madison High School (Portland)
- Milwaukie High School (Milwaukie)
- Pendleton High School (Pendleton)
- Willamette High School (Eugene)
- Woodburn High School (Woodburn)
How It Works
Each high school forms its own ECMC Scholars Program committee of guidance counselors, teachers, and principals to establish academic standards, identify students for program participation, and determine eligibility for postsecondary tuition grants.
The committees track the performance of the candidates during their junior and senior years. Student participants are advised on their level of academic progress, and encouraged to maintain or increase their academic performance to assure receipt of the ECMC Scholars Program grant. Each successful candidate will receive an initial $4,000 award for tuition at an accredited postsecondary institution. Upon the successful completion of the first year of postsecondary study and re-enrollment for a second year, each student will receive an additional award of $2,000. Up to 80 students a year will be eligible to earn $6,000 each in scholarships.
The ECMC Scholars Program is envisioned as a multi-year program, providing millions of dollars in scholarships to Oregon students, contingent on future funding availability.
