Frequently Asked Questions

If you need help with any aspect of the FAFSA application or have funding questions in addition to those addressed here, we are here to help. Contact us.

Can I complete the FAFSA before I decide which college I will attend?

Yes. In fact, it is recommended you complete the FAFSA as soon possible after Jan. 1 to be eligible for any financial aid sources that are limited in available funding amounts. When you file the FAFSA, you can request that your results be sent to the colleges you are considering. And once your FAFSA is received by the federal government, your results will be kept on file and accessible to colleges you grant permission to view your file.

Can I complete scholarship applications while I am working on my FAFSA application?

Yes. You should complete scholarship applications as soon as possible. When your school receives notice of any scholarship aid you have been awarded, the school will adjust the financial aid package it has prepared for you using the FAFSA results by taking into account the scholarship funds you will receive.

Do I have to apply for scholarships to get other financial aid?

No, but we highly recommend that you do apply if at all possible. Scholarships are considered "gift aid," meaning that unlike some aid sources such as student loans they do not have to be repaid and ultimately lower the cost of your college education.
