Four-Year Colleges & Universities

Four-year colleges and universities issue a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree once all required coursework is completed; program requirements usually require four years to finish. To provide a well-rounded curriculum, students focus on a particular area of study as well as general education courses. Read below to learn more about four-year colleges.

Admission Materials

  • Paper or Online Application
Request admissions applications by contacting college admission offices or visiting school Web sites. Some schools use The Common Application, a universal admissions application that may be submitted to multiple schools. Visit www.commonapp.org for more information.
  • High School Transcripts
Most schools require a high school transcript to view your academic history. Transcripts should indicate your Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) and class rank (if available).
  • Standardized Tests
Many colleges require ACT or SAT results. Take standardized tests at least once during your junior year, allowing you time to re-take the tests if needed.
  • Letters of Recommendations
Selective four-year colleges and universities may require letters of recommendation. The application packet will usually include specific instructions regarding letters of recommendation.
  • Extracurricular Activities
Many colleges look for students with unique backgrounds who can bring diversity to the campus.
  • Essays/Personal Statement
Competitive colleges may require an original essay or writing samples.
  • Personal Interviews/Auditions/Portfolios
Highly competitive colleges or colleges with specialized programs such as art, music, or theatre may require an in-person interview or audition with individual applicants.

Be sure to check with individual colleges to inquire about their specific admission materials requirements.

Admission Deadlines

Most four-year colleges will list deadlines for admissions materials. Be sure to check with individual colleges to inquire about their specific admission material deadlines. Types of admission deadlines include:

  • Rolling Admissions
Applications may be submitted generally between the fall of senior year through the summer of the following year. Applicants are notified of the admission decision within several weeks.
  • Regular Admissions
Applications must be completed by mid-winter and are notified of the admission decision on or around April 1.
  • Early Action
Applications must be completed by early or mid-November and are notified of the admission decision on or around Jan. 1.
  • Early Decision
Applications must be completed by early fall, typically October or earlier. Students are notified of the admission decision on or around Jan. 1. You should only select this option if you are certain you will attend the school upon admittance.
