Video Spotlight: Investing in Single Mother Student Success

November 16, 2020

There are nearly 2 million single mother students currently enrolled in college. Nine out of 10 single mothers live near at or below the poverty line and they tend to be students of color. Postsecondary education is one of the best ways for single mothers to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Unfortunately, only 8% of single mothers complete a postsecondary credential within six years of starting.

ECMC Foundation is currently the only national funder with a specific focus on the higher education success of single mothers. Learn more about the work of our grantee partners in this video and on our Single Mother Student Success page.

“There is no more beautiful moment at a CUNY graduation, when you have a parent walking to the stage with their little three-, five-, seven-, eight-year-old to their hand to get that diploma. If we can replicate that feeling on a daily basis on our campus, we will be doing the right thing for our student parents, but we would also be elevating our entire higher ed communities.” CUNY Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez on the impact of CUNY’s Kingsborogh Community College participating in World Education’s College Success for Single Mothers project, supported by ECMC Foundation.
